Why?

Backups work best when you have multiple copies, at least one of which is both current and offsite. Many people regularly backup to CDs, DVDs, flash drives, or external hard drivers. Other have good intentions of doing so but forget to do so. But what about when the worst happens? When your computer's hardware fails, fire strikes, a lightning bolt fries your computers and backup media, or a burglar runs away with the goods? An external drive stored offsite helps—but the files stored on it are out of date the second it’s unplugged and lugged away. An online backup service can be the perfect addition to your backup plan. With large amounts of storage and faster Internet connections, backing up your files online has become more viable. Our online data backup solution can also add depth to your archives since we store data in such a way that you can retrieve several—or even several hundred—previous versions of a modified file.

Not Just Data Backup - Our software is not only capable of backing up your important data. It also allows you to create online shared disks and cross-computer folder synchronizations. Online shared disks are great for people in an office environment that need to share files with each other. No need to spend thousands of dollars on a server, server operating system, and hire an IT guy to keep it running. Our simple software allows you to setup an online shared disk and connect all of your employees to it. Also, since the shared drive is stored online, you don't need to worry about backing those files up. You can access the files from anywhere. If you have an employee that uses a laptop, they won't need to be connected to the workplace local area network to work on any of those files. Even if they're in a remote location without internet, these files can be modified. Once the employee reconnects to the internet, the changes will be saved for everyone else to see.

How It Works

We use a very small piece of software to synchronize data on one or more of your computers with our offsite backup server. The software can be run on any computer (PCs, MACs, & Linux). It is very easy to use and the process of creating a backup routine or restoring files is very simple with well-written explanations throughout. While a "pretty" interface is not the reason to choose our service, it definitely makes using our service that much more enjoyable. Your initial backup will be the "seed" backup in which all data you wish to have stored securely offsite will be uploaded to our server which is stored in a massive data center and also replicated to many other locations throughout the world.

Pricing

Most online data backup services require you to pay a flat monthly or yearly fee no matter how much of the resources you use. Some even charge a pretty penny for all this room and most people won't use even 10% of this. Our pricing structure is different as we charge only for how much you've used which will benefit you no matter how much you use. This allows us to keep our pricing structure very competitive for the resources you're getting. Instead of buying resources in blocks, you pay only pennies for the storage and bandwidth resources you use. There is a minimum $6.50 per month per user subscription fee which covers things like the software licensing fees and other administrative fees and after that you pay only for what you use. We invite you to use the pricing calculator on this page to get an idea of what you might end up paying monthly.

Selecting and excluding files

The software allows you to select any locally connected drive as well as any network-mounted volume such as a NAS device or mapped-drive from another computer. Many of the other competitors do NOT allow this! Our software also has extraordinarily finely detailed settings and choices for both selection and exclusion and lets you select files by wildcards and file type (if you feel the need to do so).

How often, how fast

Upstream Internet bandwidth is a scarce commodity, as is computers’ computational power. Our software lets you set a specific network speed for uploading files as well as allowing you to set the downstream rate. The software will also allow various measures of throttling upstream bandwidth use as well as offering options that let you choose one or more of these parameters: time of day to start making backups; time of day to stop making backups; how many minutes of idle time before starting a backup; how much processor power to use while backing up; bandwidth limits for upstream traffic; frequency of backups. Of course these settings are optional and in most situations the defaults are optimal.

The software also allows you to schedule different sets of backup files, say, a critical set of folders to be archived every four hours, while music and movies are uploaded only on weekends. It lets you set up multiple backup volumes, as well as multiple backup sets and schedules for each volume.

No other competitor lets you set what should be a perfectly common and reasonable schedule: back up outside work hours and on weekends for office systems, and back up during work hours and overnight at home. With our software, you can set up multiple identical backup sets with different schedules to achieve the effect.

Our software is also SMART. Rather than re-uploading a 10 MB file that you made a change or addition to—or even a 10KB one—the software breaks a file into pieces, and then creates a mathematical summary of each piece. That summary is compared to what’s stored on the server, and only the changed or new pieces are transferred. This saves time and bandwidth!

Protecting backups

It’s not paranoid to worry about your backup data being intercepted, or being retrieved by other parties from your hosted storage area. Our software uses secure transport and makes file encryption optional. You can set your own password to encrypt files on your computer. By doing so, we will have no idea what your password is, and no cracker, government agent, or other party can decrypt your files. Lose this key and you'll be out of luck in the event you need to recover any files. There are no known cracks against 128-bit SSL/TLS (secure transport), and any discovered would affect all e-commerce and banking transactions worldwide. And since our data centers are shared by many other large corporations and government agencies, there is obviously plenty of physical security teams and technology in place at the physical location (although this is not even a concern for those who choose to enable file encryption).

Recovering data

When you need to recover data, our software offers several ways to restore a file or a volume. You can pull down files via our secure web site when you’re logged into your account from any computer or by selecting as many files as your want from the software's interface. Carbonite only lets you retrieve a single file at a time via the Web which can be very time consuming if you're trying to recover a good amount of data! Unlike Carbonite, we also offer the ability to restore older versions of each document.

In the event you need to recover files, download speeds are very fast assuming your have a high speed internet connection at your disposal. You'll also have the piece of mind that your files will be available when you need them. Some of these fly by night services will decide to close down and all your files will be deleted without your knowing. The data center we use is also used by many large corporations and government agencies and won't be going anywhere for the rest of time.
